# Ask AI

> Where Ask AI's model runs and which model it uses by default.

**Settings → Ask AI** controls the model behind Ask AI, Nora's in-app assistant.

## Route

Two routing options; the active one is checked:

* **Hosted**: use a commercial provider. Calls go out on the keys registered in [Providers](/settings/engine/providers).
* **On-prem**: route to an OpenAI-compatible endpoint you operate yourself. Register the endpoint under [Internal resources](/settings/engine/internal-resources) first; until then this option shows **Not active**.

## Default model

Pick the model Ask AI answers with, or leave it on **Auto** to let Nora choose. With hosted routing, the picker lists models from providers whose keys are connected; it stays empty until at least one key is registered.
